Is Some Space Between the Dual Locking Jaws of 16K Reese 5th Wheel Hitch Normal
Question:
Just received your Reese elite double jaw fifth wheel. First time with a double locking jaw hitch. When backed into the fifth wheel pin and I release the locking mechanism do the jaws close all the way or are they open some? when no pin is present the jaws close all the way. Thank you

It depends on how much space you are talking about. The Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30047 naturally has a little bit of space between the jaws so some space is normal. On page 8 of the linked owner's manual Reese says the following:
7. Rotate latch for hitch handle to closed position in groove of handle to be sure hitch jaws are locked closed. IF LATCH
IS NOT ALIGNED WITH GROOVE IN HANDLE, TRAILER HAS NOT BEEN PROPERLY CONNECTED TO HITCH.
DO NOT TOW! Repeat above steps until trailer is properly hitched.
So if you can get the latch to align with the groove in the handle then I wouldn't worry about a little space. If you aren't sure send me a picture and I can help you determine if it is acceptable or not.
