Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid
Question:
What type of hitch do you recommend for a 2012 Ford fusion hybrid? Are there certain restrictions or concerns because of the hybrid nature of the car?

Expert Reply:
I recommend the most popular hitch for your 2012 Ford Fusion which is the Draw-Tite model, # 24865. Most likely, there are special concerns for the vehicle regarding towing and/or the use of a cargo carrier. Check the vehicle owners manual in the towing section to determine if there are any specific recommendations for your vehicle.
For the available hitches for your Fusion there are restrictions as to what type of bike rack you can use and how many bikes you can carry. Because the hitches are all Class I, you will need to have a bike rack that is compatible with a Class I hitch. Also, a Class I hitch can only carry a maximum of 2 bikes.
For a bike rack that fits these requirements I recommend the Swagman Trailhead, # S63360. It holds 2 bikes, works with Class I hitches, and has nice features like anti-sway cradles and the ability to tilt down for greater access to the rear of the vehicle. I have included links to the installation details for the hitch and bike rack for you.
Another option would be to use a trunk mount bike rack like the Thule OutWay # TH45JV. This bike rack is the easiest trunk mount to install that I have used because it uses retractable cables instead of straps to attach to the vehicle. Thule lists only the 2 bike version for your.
