I do not have a wiring color reference for your 1997 Volkswagen Jetta, but if you are using the Tow-Ready Wiring Harness, part # 119178KIT, I can tell you how to connect the harness. Vehicle specific installation instructions are not available due to the fact that this harness fits many vehicles. But there are general instructions which I will outline below. I am also including a link to the installation instructions of the wiring harness.

There are 5 wires that will need to be wired to your 1997 Volkswagen Jetta at various places. The White wire will need to be attached to a ground point on the vehicle frame. For the other 4 wires, you will use the included circuit tester to find out what goes where. You will probe the wires at the back of your vehicles taillights to determine which wires will activate the taillights, the turn signals, and the brake lights.

The Brown wire on the kit is for the tail lights when you turn on your headlights. The Yellow wire is driver side turn signal. The Red wire is for the brake lights. The Green wire is the passenger side turn signal. I am including a link to a video installing this part on a different vehicle. It should give you an idea of the process as a whole.
