Why Does Curt 13703 Hitch Require Stabilizer Strap When Carrying Bike Rack

Question:

Hi, I installed the hitch Part #13703 per the instructions. I am using the hitch on a travel trailer. Arctic Fox 26 footer. I noticed in the directions that if I use the hitch with any accessories, such as my bike rack, I would need to used additional support straps. I am a little confused on if these support straps is necessary. My bike rack and bikes are about 250 pounds, which is 100 pounds below the rated tongue weight. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

The reason for the strap is to prevent movement of the accessory inside the trailer hitch as it can wear down the hitch over time and lead to a potential for failure. A non-supported load like a bike rack would have more of a jarring impact than a trailer that has axles that support most of the weight. In my opinion, this is more of a warranty precaution than strength concern. That said, we have to recommend you use a stabilizer strap like the part # 18050.
