Do 9k and 8k Trailer Hubs Take the Same Dimension Brake Assemblies

Question:

Hi, recently Ive been working on my 22ft. gooseneck equipment hauler, fixing a cheap fix by the previous owners by welding on 3000 pound pair of agri. spindles onto axle tubes that once had 8000 pound pair of spindles.. question. the new spindles req. bearings 387A inner and 25580 outter bearings.. But dont see any of your 8000 pound brake hub/drum assemblies that matches.. but found that your 9000-10000 pound hub/drum assembly matches.. Are both the 8000 and 9000-10000 pound drum assemblies roughly the same height from the back edge of the drum to bottom bolt surface? I was planning on using single wheel per drum axle not duel wheel

Expert Reply:

The brake assembly dimensions of the 8k and 9k Dexter trailer brake assemblies are the same at 12-1/4 inch diameter by 3-3/8 inches wide. So if you find a brake drum that matches the bearings it will still work even if it's a higher capacity since the hub is going to fit the spindle and the depth and diameter of the drum will be same.
