With a proportional brake controller, you will experience immediate and smoother braking. Power is sent to the trailer brakes in proportion to the braking force being applied to the tow vehicle. You will get the smoothest braking and fastest brake response with a proportional controller, and reduce brake wear on the vehicle and trailer.

With a time delayed controller, a preset amount of power is sent to the trailer brakes but there will be a delay from when the brake pedal is pressed to when power is sent to the trailer brakes.

Either controller will work to send power to the electric brakes on your trailer. If you will be towing often, I would recommend going with a proportional brake controller for smoother braking and performance.

Both the Prodigy P2, part # 90885 and the P3, part # 90195 are proportional controllers. These controllers are very similar, and the main difference is that the P3 can be used with electric over hydraulic brakes. The P3 also has an LCD display and is able to troubleshoot any problems in the wiring system. One advantage the P2 has is that it can be mounted 360 degrees. Basically, the P3 has a few more added features, but can perform the same functions as the P3.

If your 2008 Silverado has a factory 7-way, no additional connectors are needed and you will connect to the wires that are present under the dash, and you there may be a few connections under the hood that will need to be made (see FAQ).

If your Silverado does not have a factory trailer connector, you will need Pollak 7-Way Trailer Connector # PK11916. The under hood connections may also need to be made (see FAQ).

I have linked an FAQ on brake controllers that compares proportional and time delayed controllers. Also linked is a video installation of the Prodigy P2 # 90885 being installed on a 2009 Silverado.
