Installing Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller on 2008 Ford Expedition
Question:
I installed a voyager in my 2008 ford Expedition. There are four wires coming out of the back that plug in under the dash. Can i use the seven plug connector to hook up to or do i have adapt it to a four pin plug from the trailer. Thank you

To install the brake controller, you will need the vehicle-specific wiring adapter, part # 3035-P. One end of the adapter plugs into the back of the controller, the other end would plug into the connector under the dash (which it sounds like you have already found.)
If your Expedition was equipped with the factory-installed 7-way trailer connector, then you are all set.
If you have the 4-pole flat trailer connector, you will need an adapter, part # 37185. The adapter will plug into your existing 4-pole, with 4 wires remaining. Look at the frame rail on the drivers side of the vehicle at the rear. Trace the wiring for the 4-pole along the frame rail. Look for an orange (or red) and a blue wire on the frame rail. The red or orange wire on the vehicle would connect to the black wire on the adapter. The blue wire on the vehicle would connect to the blue wire on the adapter. The white adapter wire would ground to the vehicle frame, and the purple wire, which is usually used to power the reverse lamps on the trailer would be tapped into the reverse light circuit on the vehicle. If the trailer does not have reverse lights, this wire can be capped off and tucked up out of the way.
It sounds as if you are saying that your trailer uses a 4-pole connector. The 4-pole provides lighting functions only. If this is the case, the trailer will not have brakes, and therefore you will not need a brake controller to tow that particular trailer. If your vehicle has the 7-way connector, all you will need to tow a trailer with a 4-pole would be the appropriate adapter, part # PK12716.
I have provided links to the install instructions for your Voyager (in case you need them) as well as a link to our Brake Controller FAQ page.
