The 4-pole wiring kits offered for your 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac are hardwired types, Tekonsha kit # 18252 and Curt # C58044. I recommend the Tekonsha since it includes the required circuit tester, but if you already own a tester like # PTW2992 either wiring kit will be fine.
You'll need to remove a taillight assembly or at least access the wiring leading to it so you can test those wires by lighting function to tell you which to connect to each 4-pole lead. An example of a Ford installation is shown in the linked video. The wiring configuration is white = ground, brown = running lights, green = right stop/turn and yellow = left stop/turn. The vehicle wire colors probably will not match exactly. A help article on wiring is linked too.
If you want to mount the connector externally you can use 4-pole bracket # 18144, but some prefer to keep it inside the vehicle when not in use to protect it from the elements.
