How To Choose the Best Strait-Line Weight Distribution System for 500-600 Lbs Tongue Weight

Expert Reply:
Yes, you can use the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control part # RP66074 with only 600 lbs of tongue weight. The tongue weight range that this system is designed to incorporate is based on not only the loaded tongue weight of the trailer but also any weight stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The actual weight of the system (100 lbs) does not count as tongue weight because it becomes part of the vehicle's frame.
If this new information puts you too far under 600 lbs then you may be better off with the Strait-Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control part # RP66073 which is rated for 400 lbs - 800 lbs of total tongue weight. However, I typically recommend that you go with the next system up (part # RP66074) to what you think you need as this would then account for any errors in weight calculations as well as the ability to add more if needed.
Please note that neither the above systems come with a hitch ball so in order to add this I recommend using the 2" Hitch Ball part # A-90 or the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball part # 19286. Once you have the hitch ball you will be ready to setup. I also may add that you made a great choice in the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System.
