Is Towed Vehicle Braking System Needed When Motorhome has Telma Braking System?

Question:

Hello, I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport that I am setting up to tow behind a 36foot 2004 Itasca Sun Cruiser. My motorhome is equipped with a Telma supplemental braking system. do I still need an additional braking system for the towed vehicle or can I rely on the Telma? TIA.

Your Telma Braking system in your 2004 Itasca Sun Cruiser is basically an additional or supplemental braking system for the coach itself. This is a great option to have and it will absolutely assist with braking whether towing a vehicle or not, but you will still require a supplemental braking system in your Jeep you are flat towing. All towed vehicles require a separate supplemental braking system to be legal in almost all US states.

For your 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport, I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # SM99251. This system is in my opinion the best on the market because of its function and ease of use. It does require installation and adjustment of course, but after that it becomes a plug and play system that literally only requires a flip of the switch. It is a customer favorite because of the simple use and hidden components. The small box with the switch is all that is exposed and that can even be hidden inside a glove box or console if desired. I've attached some videos to assist.

If you prefer a portable system, then I recommend the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # RM-9400. This is easy to install, but also requires storage when not in use and setting up each time you tow. This is a really easy to use system that will also require a stop light switch # RM-751452 and outlet kit # RM-9332. These are easy to install for a DIY'er which is definitely a bonus.
