Roof Cargo Box Recommendation to Fit Factory Crossbars of 2010 Ford Transit Connect
Question:
Hello, I have Yakima cross bars 40 inches spread outside edges on my 2010 Ford Transit Connect. Specs for this box say maximum spread is 35 inches. Why the limitation? Will it sag with weight? Or is the bottom not flat all the way across? If I only put light stuff inside like clothes, is it OK to put it on 40-inch spread cross bars? Is the bottom flat so I could drill different holes and still have it fit across? I was able to put an older Yakima space booster cargo box on these cross bars with no trouble similar dimensions, by just drilling a few extra holes.

The mounting hardware of the SportRack Horizon Rooftop Cargo Box # SR7011 that you referenced can only spread out to 35 inches. Since we can't recommend modifying the hardware you'd have to go with a larger cargo box that is designed for the wider spread like you have. For that we have the Yakima SkyBox 21 Rooftop Cargo Box # Y07337 which can fit up to 42 inch wide crossbar spreads. Most cargo boxes are limited to around 35 inch spreads so this is your best option. It can fit up to 21 cubic feet of cargo space and can open from either side so it's a really great option. The mounting hardware is also much easier to use than the Sportrack you mentioned too.
I attached a review video for this cargo box for you to check out as well.
