Best Weight Distribution System for 2017 Passport Trailer with 725 to 1,000 Pound Tongue Weight

Question:

I’m looking for feedback on a weight distribution hitch and size. My current setup is a system with an attachable sway control. My trailer is a 2017 passport with a gross vehicle weight of 6960 lbs. The trailer is 30 ft long. The TW can range from 725 to 1k lbs. My tow vehicle is a 2016 ford 3.5 eco boost. The payload is 1892. If feel the payload is important because with my family, dogs and wood, we knock off 600 lbs from that payload. I’m thinking I’m in the 10k GTW, 1kTW range for a hitch. Thanks,

When looking for a properly rated weight distribution system the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your setup. This includes both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your Ford. This means that only added cargo weight at the rear of the vehicle (not necessarily your family and pets) will affect the system you choose and how well it performs.

You will want to choose a system that closely matches the 725-1,000 pound tongue weight range on your trailer while also leaving a bit of wiggle room for added weight from the back half of your truck bed.

For this setup I highly recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 that features a tongue weight capacity range of 600 to 1,200 pounds and has integrated sway control using automotive-grade friction material to quickly correct any side-to-side movement. The system's clamp-on brackets also greatly reduce installation time and eliminate the need for any drilling.

The only thing you will need to add if you don't have one already is a compatible hitch ball like the # 2 inch # A-90 or the 2-5/16 inch # 19286.

This system will offer a better match to your total tongue weight than the similar Equal-i-zer system you were looking at and in my opinion is a much higher quality product that the Blue Ox that you also were considering.

I have attached a couple short video demonstrations that you can check out as well.
