To flat tow your 1986 Chevy G30 van you are going to need a number of parts, starting with a base plate and tow bar. Since there are no vehicle-specific base plates for your van I recommend checking out the Curt Tow Bar with Adjustable-Width Arms # C19745.

This comes with clevis mounts that need to be bolted on the van, and will require you have or fabricate a flat area on the frame, as you can see by the accompanying cut out of the linked directions. Also note that this tow bar and mount has a 5,000 lb capacity. You will also need safety cables # RM-643.

For lights I recommend using simple magnetic lights, the Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights # TL21RK; these will plug into the 4-way of your tow vehicle, but if it has a 7-way you can use the Pollak 7 Pole to 4 Way Connector Adapter # PK12716.

A supplemental braking system is required in nearly all states and is a very good idea even the state you are in does not require it and for that I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251 because it is a one-time install that you will never have to deactivate or reactivate it.

It is also likely you will need a high-low adapter such as # RM-048-8 to keep your tow bar level with your tow vehicle. The adapter you need is going to depend on some measurements you'll need to take. I have added a link to a help article on high-low adapters which explains the measurements you'll need, as well as a link to our page with our selection of adapters. I have also added links to video reviews and installations for you to take a look at.
