How to Select 3,500 lb Axles for Boat Trailer

Hello, I have a triple axle trailer with 10k GVRW, can I upgrade to 5k axles and pull a 13k lb boat? The trailer has no sticker or badge so not sure of the make/model Thanks

A trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs would not be able to pull a 13,000 lb boat; the trailer would be able to handle no more than 10,000 lbs. Even if you upgraded to axles with a capacity over 10,000 lbs the trailer's GVWR would not change because its components, such as the frame, are not rated for more than 10,000 lbs.

If you do need new axles that will give you a combined rating of more than 10,000 lbs you can select three axles with a 3,500 lb rating. To determine the correct replacement axles you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub-face to hub-face and spring center to spring center as in the diagram I have added.

For example, the 3,500 lb Dexter Trailer Axle # T3584F-8974 measures 89 inches from hub face to hub face and 74 inches spring center to spring center.

The 3,500 lb Dexter Trailer Axle # 7359765 measures 95 inches from hub face to hub face and 80 inches spring center to spring center.
