Automatic Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2018 Toyota Tundra Short Bed
Question:
Looking for a 5th wheel setup for my 18 Tundra 6-1/2. Our trailer is a lightweight unit made with composite materials, 6.5K gross. I know nobody makes 5th wheel hitches rated that low but how high a rating do I really need?

It is always beneficial to have a good safety margin in any towing system and even with the lowest-rated hitches which are 15K you will get that. But as you go up in weight rating there will be more worthwhile features available. So, I suggest not focusing on weight capacity and instead selecting a hitch with features that will enhance your towing experience even if it is rated higher than you might need.
I strongly recommend Demco's Hijacker Autosliding Hitch # DM8550034 and the matching installation kit # DM8552020-71. This setup will give you an 18K-rated hitch with a full 14-inches of slider travel rather than the 10-inches you get from the Pro Series # RP30051. Best of all you do NOT have to get out of the cab to release a manual slider (it will always be raining when you need to do that!). Simply make your turn and the Demco automatically releases to give you the turning clearance you need. The Pro Series # RP30051 is good hitch but it simply will not give you the same towing experience.
Please check out the linked review video for the Demco. This will show you how it works and what it can do to make 5th wheeling a whole lot nicer. If you need a wiring harness for the bed you can use kit # 41157.
