Replacement 235/85R16 Trailer Tires for Big Horn 5th Wheel

Question:

Getting ready to purchase 4 tires for my Big Horn 5th wheel 3610RE - 15,500 GVWR. I have Goodyear G614 RST LT235/85R16’s. They were 400.00 a piece and have had great success. I live in the road full time and my tires are my life. I would like to know a good tire for my fit but not have to pay exorbitant prices. The manufacturers suggested load rating is E. Are my current tires overkill? Thanks

It is a sensible practice to follow the tire selection guidelines from the maker of your trailer. If it came with Load Range G tires, use new ones with that capacity.

It is also perfectly fine to select replacement tires with a higher weight load range rating, and/or a higher speed rating than the OEM tires, when that option is available. I don't ever recommend downgrading specs but upgrading them is fine. Typically this just gives you a bigger safety margin against the threat of heat build-up in the tire, and that is usually the root cause for tire failure.

In your tire size 235/85-16 we offer various radial tires in Load Ranges E, F and G. All are shown on the page I linked for you.

In Load Range G we have two options, the Provider # TTWPRG235R16 and the Westlake # LHWL410. Both require 110-psi pressure and have a capacity of 4400 lbs. The Provider tires carry a higher speed rating, code M, which means they are good to 81-mph. The Westlake tires are rated to 75-mph.

The manufacturer warranty and support differ between these two tires. The Westlake tire # LHWL410 has a 5-year warranty and includes 2 years of complimentary roadside assistance, which gives you flat tire repair service available 24/7 anywhere in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico. The Provider has a 2-year warranty and no roadside assistance program.

With all of that considered, if it were my money I would go for the Westlake tires for their longer warranty and roadside assistance program. These will cost you about half of what the current tires cost.
