Wiring Needed to Use Curt Echo Brake Controller on a 2006 BMW X5 with 4-Way Flat Connector
Question:
Hi, I have a 2006 BMW X5. Im getting a hitch installed but they only have the 4 flat connector. My trailer has the 7 round connection. I purchased a curt 51180 brake controller and Im wondering if I could just buy a 4 flat to 7 round adapter and use my curt 51180 brake controller to control the brakes on my trailer? Thanks for your help! Im new to this.

You are most of the way there!
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 that you purchased for your 2006 BMW X5 just needs the basic trailer lighting functions and 12V power to be fully operational.
A 4-Way Flat connector like the popular Tekonsha ZCI # 119250KIT provides the basic trailer lighting functions so once that is installed you simply need to install the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L. This includes the 4-Way to 4-Way/7-Way adapter as well as wiring for you to run from the adapter up to the battery on your X5 for power (through the circuit breaker).
Once you have all of this installed you are good to go! I have attached a helpful article about routing the power wire to your battery for you to reference.
To complete your towing setup you also need a ball mount kit. We have a wide varity of these available on the linked page but you may be interested in the Kit # 989891 which has a 1" Rise/2" Drop and comes with both a 1-7/8" and a 2" hitch ball. I have attached a ball mount article as well to assist you in choosing the correct one for your application.
