Recommended Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement to Reduce Sway in 2004 Suburban 1500
Question:
Looking to make suspension improvements on our 04 1500 Suburban. It has moderate sway in cornering and windy, non-towing conditions. Could also use leveling improvement when towing small trailers producing 300 to 800 lbs tongue weight. Need to keep ride nice and firm, but comfortable. Will check anti-sway bar and links this week, meantime are there other recommendations please? Thank you

For your 2004 Suburban 1500 we offer several types of rear-axle suspension enhancement kits including air springs, jounce spring and helper leaf springs. All of these appear on the linked page.
Just click on your drivetrain, 2WD or 4WD, to see the kits that will fit your 1500.
For a 2WD or 4WD with rear coil springs I suggest the AirLift air bag kit # AL60769 because it is moderate in cost and yet it gives you up to 1000-lbs of load support for your towing tongue weight and also the ability to adjust its pressure to suit any given driving conditions, such as more pressure in windy conditions.
This kit includes everything for installation and manual inflation, but you can make the most of the air springs by adding a compressor that lets you adjust stiffness as you drive instead of having to pull over to use the air service at a filling station or to use an on board air tank to add pressure. Compressor kit # AL25592 is what I suggest if you want to go this route.
If you don't have rear coils then instead I suggest the SuperSprings jounce spring kit # SSR-204-40 which replace the factory bump stops. These are easier to install than air bags and they require no maintenance at all once bolted on. These are a no-drill installation and they fit both 2WD and 4WD versions. These too give you up to 1000-lbs of load support but without adjustment capability you might find them too stiff in some circumstances.
Given the age of your Suburban 1500 you might start by checking the condition of the end links and frame bushings on its OEM sway bar. They may have enough wear or be deteriorated from age enough to merit replacement. The aftermarket suspension enhancement kits we offer are intended for use with OEM suspensions that are in good shape; these may not be able to give you the handling you want if the stock suspension is in less than good shape.
