Is Aftermarket Brake Controller Needed on New Truck with Factory Brake Controller
Question:
My 2018 GMC Sierra Denali HD 3500 has a factory installed electric brake controller. Do I need an aftermarket controller such as the Prodigy P2/3?

If your 2018 GMC Sierra Denali 3500 is equipped with a factory integrated brake controller then an aftermarket unit is not necessary.
The factory brake controller on your truck will work to power and control the brakes on your trailer and you would only need an aftermarket model if you decide the factory controller is not sufficient or simply don't like it as much as an aftermarket model that you may have had in a previous truck.
If you ever decide that you would like to replace the factory brake controller on your Sierra I highly recommend Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 as it is very well known for its reliability and ease of use. Its easy-to-read display lets you adjust a plethora of settings, switch between different trailer settings or driver preferences, and read diagnostic messages whenever the controller senses a potential issue.
To install the controller all you would need is the Plug-In Adapter # 3016. One end of the adapter plugs into the brake controller and the other end connects to the factory port beneath the dash of your Sierra.
I have attached a short video demonstration on the Prodigy P3 that you can also check out.
