Cargo Box for a 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon with Factory and Aftermarket Roof Rack

Question:

Hi Etrailer folks, What is the proper roof rack spacing for installing Yakima or Thule bars on a 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5i with factory installed rail rack? Also, once those grabfoot bars are installed, what is the spacing for a roof top carrier? Thank you.

The max crossbar spread on your 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon (excluding sport) will be right at 38" with either the Yakima or Thule systems. From Yakima we have the Yakima JetStream Crossbar System part # Y00425 and part # Y00147.

I recommend choosing the roof rack that has the same brand as the cargo box that way you can match the locks. The Thule Pulse Medium Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH614 that you referenced can only accommodate a crossbar spread up to 33-3/8" so it will not work on your Outback Wagon.

Instead, I recommend using the Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 part # Y07192 which has the same 14 cubic feet storage capacity as the Thule Pulse but can accommodate a crossbar spread up to 40" so it will work on your Outback Wagon. Again, I recommend pairing this with the Yakima JetStream Crossbar System part # Y00425 and part # Y00147 so you can get the Yakima Same Key System. Once you get the carg box and find out your key number you can order four of the Replacement SKS Lock Cores part # Y8771-A### with the "###" being your key number.

I have attached a review video of the cargo box for you as well.
