The chucking that you are experiencing isn't uncommon and there are ways to mitigate it. To help I need to know what Reese system you currently have. For instance, a higher level adapter like a Goose Box # RP85FR will have more shock absorption to assist than the Hi-Rise Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter by Bulldog, Draw-Tite and Reese # 9480.
If you are using another adapter like the Curt X5 # C16220 you mentioned, that information would also be helpful. Sometimes the chucking has to do with the connection and other times it has to do with the trailer suspension, so determining which is the best option to resolve your issue is dependent on the components you are currently using. There will be minimal flex when using the X5 adapter, but each extra component will add some movement and that can cause the jerking you are experiencing because movement of one piece may not fully engage until the second piece has not movement left causing the jerking/chucking that is frustrating and uncomfortable.
