The towing capacity of your 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 is going to vary drastically based on options such as engine size, transmission type, axle ratio, and bed length. If you can provide me with these bits of information then I would be happy to look up the towing capacity of your vehicle but if not you will need to take a look for yourself starting on page 4-71 in your owner's manual.
If it turns out that the weight of the boat and trailer (while loaded) is under the towing capacity of your truck then you can pull it. The use of a weight distribution system will not increase the towing capacity of your truck but it is required if the trailer is over 5,000 lbs.
For a weight distribution system, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control part # FA94-00-1000 which is rated for a total tongue weight of 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs. If you have a straight pole trailer then you are also going to need to use the Pole-Tongue Adapter part # EQ95-01-5950. I like the Fastway e2 because it has built-in sway control at a price that is very competitive. There also won't be any issues with this system if you have surge brakes.
I have attached a review video of the Fastway e2 for you as well.
