Recommended Air Brake to Electric Brake Controller for 1969 International Loadstar 1890 Truck
Question:
which controller would give better performance I have noticed that instead of using a brake controller like this one, 1300-80, it is recommended to use the , # 90885, brake controller. Is the electric brake controller as consistent with braking as what the air controlled one would be? I am trying to put a controller on a 1969 International Loadstar 1890 that is all original and rides rough. Ive heard the electric brake controllers dont do very well in rough conditions? Normally I am hauling a tandem axle 25foot goose neck with a full size pick-up on it. Somewhere around 20,000 lbs including the trailer. It would be nice to get proportional braking help from the trailer when loaded but also be able to control them well enough to not lock the trailer tires when unloaded too.

The Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C will work very well with your 1969 International Loadstar 1890 truck. These controllers are designed for air brake systems to create smooth electric trailer braking. They are both proportional controllers so they will give you the braking you are seeking. They are both adjustable so you will be able to ensure your unloaded trailer can also be towed as desired with smooth braking. Both of these controllers work well, so it comes down to your preference for appearance and function in your cab.
The electric brake controllers like # 90885 will have internal sensors that determine deceleration and apply the trailer brakes accordingly. They are not as smooth for a rough riding towing vehicle as you stated so I recommend going with one of the air systems listed above.
