Here's how you'll be able to determine if the Thule Force XL Cargo Box part # TH6358B will fit the factory crossbars of your 2016 Toyota Highlander and also allow the rear hatch to open. You'll need to measure from the center of the front crossbar back to the hatch seam on your roof. If that measurement is at least 53-5/8 inches the box will allow the hatch top open without interference. The L version of the Force part # TH6357B only requires 47-1/2 inches so that would be a great option too if the XL won't fit. This has 16 cubic feet of space compared to the XL which has 17.
