Expert Reply:
The Roadmaster Base Plates, # 901-1, for the 1986 Subaru Brat, do install on existing holes on the frame of the vehicle. Roadmaster states that installation of most mounting brackets requires moderate mechanical aptitude and skills. They strongly recommend professional installation by an experienced installer.
These base plates are compatible with all Roadmaster tow bars. The most popular is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video review for you. For safety cables, I recommend the Coiled Cables, # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground.
For lighting there are several options depending on how often you will be towing the vehicle. I have included a link to our FAQ article on the various options for you so you can determine which one best fits your needs.
Finally, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest system to set up and use in the Roadmaster Even Brake, # RM-9400, which is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.
