How to Extend Brake Output Wire When Flipping Axles
Question:
Hi. I have a 17.5’ travel trailer with a single 4.2K rated 3”round axle with electric brakes. I am preparing to “flip” the axle - that is: remove the axle from the above the leaf spring mounting position and remount the axle on the below the spring position in order to raise the ground clearance of the frame. I believe when I go to reinstall the plugs for the electric brake wires into the brake housing, I am going to find them approximately 6” to short for the new axle position. My question is: Are there extension cords with prewired fittings to extent the reach of the brake wires? If not, what problems can I anticipate splicing in stock wire to these bake wires?

There are not any extension cords with pre wired fitting that you can install on the brake output wire of your trailer when you flip the axle. However, this is not really needed as all you would need to do is cut the wire in half around 6" or so away from the braking assembly and then extend it out with part # 10-1-1 (per foot). In order to attach the new extended wire you can use the wire butt connectors, part # DW05745-10. These butt connectors have a heat shrink housing which is going to keep out dirt and moisture. If installed correctly with these butt connectors then you won't have any issues in the future.
