Brake Controller for Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes

Question:

Dear ETrailer staff, Im thinking of converting our massive double axle steel bunk 25foot boat trailer from drum surge brakes to electric over hydraulic, for more control on icy roads downhill etc. Our tow vehicle uses a Prodigy RF brake controller - will that be compatible with either the Hydrastar or Dexter system? And for the Hydrastar Marine, would I need the 1000 or 1200 psi system, or do you need more information to tell? Thanks very much.

I do have a great option for you, however your Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Brake Controller 90250 is not compatible with electric-over-hydraulic brakes. Unfortunately you will not be able to use the controller with your trailer after converting the braking system.

For an excellent brake controller that is compatible with EOH brakes I recommend taking a look at the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a wired proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your tow vehicle. I really like its digital LED display and continuous diagnostics that will quickly alert you to any potential issues.

For a two axle trailer like what you have the HydraStar Vented Marine Acuator - 1,000 psi # HS381-8065 should work well. The HydraStar 1,200 psi Actuator # HS381-8066 is built to work on heavier trailers with up to 3 axles.

I have attached a great article that details the steps and parts needed to convert a trailer to electric-over-hydraulic brakes that you might also find helpful.
