What is the Proper Inflation Method for Trailer Tires
Question:
Tire spec is 80 psi at max load 2,830 lbs. Is that 80 psi cold or running temperature? I inflate to 80 psi cold and it goes up to 84/85 psi when running at 65/70 mph. Is that normal and within the range specifications? I’ve heard so many horror stories about tire blow outs that I want to ensure I monitor appropriate specifications. The tire is Westlake, Super ST, 225/75R15, Speed rating “L” and load rating “E”. Max speed 75 mph and 2,830 lb load Thx,

Expert Reply:
Trailer tires need to be inflated to their max pressure when "cold" or before warmed up after driving. Since you inflated yours to the max pressure of 80 when cold the temp fluctuation you mentioned is normal.
Normally tires blow out due to improper inflation, overloading, or exceeding the speed rating for the tire.
