Trailer Tire and Aluminum Wheel Recommendation for an Aluminum Utility Trailer

Question:

I have an aluminum utility trailer which came with p235/75r15 tires on 5 lug 5on 4.5 rims. I would like to put aluminum rims on the trailer. How wide of rims do I need and can I get them in a 5 lug? Is a 6inch rim wide enough or would I have to go to a 225 on a 6inch rim?

First, the P235/75R15 tire is a passenger tire and really is not the best choice for a trailer. I would recommend going with a ST225/75D15, ST rated trailer tire # TTWSF22515D with a 6 inch aluminum wheel like the Aluminum Sendel Series T02 Machined Trailer Wheel # AM22653, with 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. ST rated tires have thicker sidewall construction for load carrying capacity and will outperform and outlast passenger tires on a trailer.

The above recommendation is based on your trailer axles being rated at 5,080 lbs or less. You should also check the overall height of the tires on your trailer and compare that to the overall height of the # TTWSF22515D tire. If they are taller you will need to make sure there is clearance for using the new tire size. You should find that the # TTWSF22515D on the # AM22653 wheel is just over 1/2 inch shorter than the wheel and tire you mentioned.

The Wheels # AM22653 combination are 6 inches wide. Also, these wheels and tires do not come mounted. They will need to be mounted at a local shop upon delivery.
