Weight Capacity for Hitch to Use with Bike Rack on 2018 Mazda CX-5

Question:

Hello. I have a 2018 Mazda CX-5. I am looking for a trailer hitch for my bike rack but am a litte confused about the capacity. I see some of the hitches have a tongue weight of upwards of 600 pounds. My manual looks like the vehicle has a capacity of 200 pounds. If i put the hitch on my car will i have 600 pound capacity or the 200 or somewhere in between? Which hitch do you recommend?

Based on my research it does look like your 2018 Mazda CX-5 features a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. You are always going to be limited by your weakest link so regardless of the rating for the trailer hitch you install you will need to adhere to the vehicle's 200 pound limit.

The Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 76138 is what I recommend for your Mazda CX-5. This will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening perfect for hitch-mounted accessories like a bike rack and it features a higher weight capacity than the alternative options which simply indicates an overall stronger unit.

I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.
