Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2015 BMW X5 40e
Question:
Does the Curt trailer hitch require trimming of the rear bumper facia? If so, does anybody offer a hitch that does not require cutting the trim. How do you get the taillights of a trailer to work when hooked up to a BMW X5 40e

If you have the 2015 BMW X5 40e (please let me know if you have a different model year) the Curt Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 13077 that you referenced is confirmed to fit but it will require fascia trimming during installation. This is the case with all of the trailer hitches available that are designed for your vehicle. This is required so that the receiver can fit below the rear bumper.
This Curt hitch does however have a slightly easier installation process compared to the alternatives as you won't need to obtain special push rivets from a local BMW dealer or permanently remove the impact structure like you would with the Draw-Tite and EcoHitch models respectively.
I have attached an installation video on the 2017 model X5 so you can get a better idea of what will be required during installation.
In order to connect to and power a trailer's signal lights you will need to install a 4-Way connector on the vehicle. For this the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT is the best option. This unique wiring system allows you to install the needed connector without having to actually cut or splice into the delicate factory wiring on your BMW. It uses zero-contact interface sensors to identify the current flowing through each wire by simply clamping onto it.
I have attached the written installation instructions and a video on an ealier model X5 that you can take a look at.
In order to tow a trailer you will also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
