5th Wheel Base Rails and Hitch for 2005 Chevy 2500HD Cab and Chassis

Question:

Im removing my utility body from my 2005 chevy single wheel truck 2500HD diesel. I want to go from no bed to 5th wheel. I would be nice to have some kind of bed.

For your 2005 Chevy 2500HD, the utility body trucks came on the Cab and Chassis foundation which is not the same as the regular 2500 Silverado. The frame is more narrow, so you will need to customize the fit to use a 5th wheel hitch as there are not base rails that will simply bolt on without the support in the middle.

My recommendation is to use the Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 10 Bolt # RP30035 centered about 1-3 inches in front of your axle and then use a heavy duty standard hitch like the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Wiring Harness - Dual Jaw - 22,000 lbs # RP30033. If you want a very basic hitch then the kit you asked from # PS30128 will work, but it is an entry level hitch that I recommend only for the price point if you won't be towing often.

If you don't want to add base rails when customizing or want to add a flat bed, then I recommend the Reese Low-Profile 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 30,000 lbs # RP30054 which simply bolts to the bed or custom plate between the frame rails of the truck. This won't have the same overall height but a higher capacity.
