Recommended Trailer Hitch for Towing a Car Hauler with a 2019 Ram 1500

Question:

I've got a 2019 RAM and I need to tow my wife's car several hundred miles when we move. I'll be renting a car hauler traile but need to get the RAM ready to pull it.

The hitch to fit your 2019 Ram 1500 is the Curt # C15005. It's custom designed to fit your truck and has plenty of capacity to tow a car on a trailer. You also need a ball mount, hitch ball, and pin and clip. I've linked our selections of each but you also may want to look at an adjustable ball mount. This way if you tow a different trailer sometime it'll be more likely to work for you. A good choice that has all three ball options is the Buyer's Products # 3371802225.

You also need a wiring harness, like part # 74682. There should be a round connector under your truck's rear bumper to plug it into.

Since the trailer is going to be carrying a car it's going to have some weight to it. Normally you want a brake controller in your truck to power the trailer's brakes. Since you're just renting it I'm not sure what kind of brakes are going to be on the trailer but if it has electric brakes you need a brake controller in your truck to power them. For an inexpensibe controller look at the Curt Discovery, part # C51120. It's a basic controller but it'll get you by on your trip. It plugs into a connector under your truck's dash using a wiring harness, part # C51458.

If you want a higher quality controller with better stopping power that's proportional with how your truck is stopping look at the Prodigy P3, part # 90195. It's one of the best controllers on the market because how easy it is to use and how reliable it is. Its wiring harness is part # 3024-P.

Finally, I recommend adding air springs to your truck. Towing that kind of weight is likely going to cause the truck's rear to squat which can put extra stress on the suspension and increase the chance of trailer sway. The Air Lift LiftLoader 5000, part # AL57375, is a confimed fit. Even if you don't continue to tow much later on these are still a good addition because they'll also help your truck's ride with the bed loaded.
