Brake Controller Solution for 2017 Chevy Silverado that Doesn't Like Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Question:
I have a 2017 GMC 3500 dually pulling a 22,000# horse trailer that has EOH braking system. I am aware the EOH brakes on the trailer do not engage when stopped GM designed it that way. However, it does engage when in motion I had someone in the bed if the truck listening going down the road. The problem is that the truck does most of the braking and the EOH kicks in after a 10-15 mph reduction in speed. Not cool. After going around the block doing 8-10 tests between 25-40 mph, my truck brakes were burning up. I mentioned this to a friend who has a 2015 GMC and he immediately said you need to get an aftermarket brake controller. Is this really necessary? If so, what controller do you recommend and how does it integrate with the OEM controller? Have you heard of this before with GM? Thanks,

Helpful Expert Reply:
Factory integrated brake controllers in newer trucks are not always reliable with electric over hydraulic actuators. The newer trucks mostly all say their integrated controllers work with the EOH setups but we've found that it isn't always the case. What you described happening is an example of an integrated controller not working right with the actuator so an aftermarket controller will be your best option.
The Prodigy P3 part # 90195 will be your best option. This is our most reliable and all-around best brake controller and it works flawlessly withe EOH setups. You'll also need the install harness part # 3016 which is specific for your 2017 Silverado. I attached a help article that details how to install a brake controller in a truck like yours with an integrated controller as well.
