Does Height Settings Of Fifth Wheel Hitch Include Height of Bed Rail

Question:

I understand that the measurement for the height is from the bed of the truck to the top of the hitch. Is that before the hitch is placed on the bed rails or after it is secured on top of the rails. So in other words if is placed on the rails do you add the the thickness of the rail to the height. Example if it is 18 inch off the bed of the truck when is placed on the bed rails would it now be approximately 19. Its critical for my truck to be around 18. I would need to know if it should be set at 18inch or 17 1/4. Thank you

Expert Reply:

The height of a fifth wheel hitch like the Demco Recon part # DM8550043 that you referenced would be the distance from the top of the rail to the top of the hitch. The height adjustability of the Recon is 15-1/2", 17-1/4", and 18" which you'd need to add the height of the rails to this to get the total height. Depending on how tall your rails are will deterine which of the lower two height settings should be used.
