Recommended Tandem Axle Suspension Kit for Converting to Double Eye Leaf Springs

Question:

Hello, I’m changing my trailer from a tandem axle with slipper springs to a tandem axle with double eye springs. My questions are how do I figure out the appropriate vertical length of the equalizer? Should the mounting brackets for the equalizer and springs be the same length?. I’m going to be using two 2000lb axles. I have a total of 52” of length on aluminum Ibeam trailer to mount this setup. The tire size is 205/65-10

Expert Reply:

The appropriate vertical height of double-eye leaf spring equalizers and hangers mostly depends on the axle diameter. 2K axles typically have a diameter of 1-3/4-inches. If you were to use a tandem axle kit such as # APT5 which has hangers that are 3-3/4-inches tall and equalizers that match well you'll be all set.

It looks like you have just enough room to install this kit, as shown in the linked diagram. You will have about 5-inches of clearance between the trailer frame and the axle center which is plenty for proper functioning of the suspension. You can use 3-Leaf Double-Eye Springs # e84SR.
