Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
I have a 2018 Outback. I don't plan on doing any towing but I've been told not to get a 1-1/4 inch hitch. Why is that?

The reason that a trailer hitch with a 2" receiver is better than one with a 1-1/4" receiver is that you will be able to use more accessories with it. Even if the accessory you are looking at has a 1-1/4" shank you can typically still use an adapter like the Brophy # HT02.
For your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon I highly recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 76227 trailer hitch. This is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2" receiver. It installs behind your rear bumper for a clean look and no drilling is necessary for the installation.
I have attached the installation details for you to reference as well as a video that shows why this is the best option for your Outback Wagon.
