Expert Reply:
A camper's VIN will usually be located up towards the front of the camper around the coupler, usually on a main information tag/plate. If you can't find anything there then your best bet is to inspect the frame along the trailer for any numbers. If a VIN is nowhere to be found your best option will be to contact your local DMV and they can walk you through how to get the trailer inspected so a new VIN can be assigned.
Considering your recent experience you might also be interested the Linxup GPS Tracking Device # 300-AT3-S. This unit can be discreetly mounted to the trailer so that you can keep track of its location. You can also customize a geofence so that it alerts you if the trailer crosses the perimeter that you set.
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can also check out.
