Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2016 Ford Explorer Towing Trailer with Surge Brakes
Question:
I have a boat trailer that has back up lights. It will brake in reverse if the harness is the right one. So is that a 7 pin and can it be wired in a 2016 Ford Explorer. I believe the vehicle does not have a tow package

Expert Reply:
Typically if boat trailer has surge brakes and a reverse lockout solenoid it uses a 5-way in nearly all situations. It is very possible a 7-way could be used but it's not as likely. Either way we can help though. For your 2016 Ford Explorer without the factory towing package we have the 7-Way kit part # 118272 whic his a custom fit that will install easily. If your trailer has a round plug for it's connector this would be all that you need.
If instead it's a flat 5 pin connector you'd still want the 7-way I mentioned but then you'd also need the adapter part # A10-7275VP and you'd be set.
