Parts Needed to Tow Trailer With 2005 Acura MDX

Im considering adding the necessary equipment to my 2005 Acura MDX in order to tow a small travel trailer. My MDX does not have the factory tow package. The trailer is less than 3k lbs, single axle, with electronic brakes. It is a rental trailer so no modifications can be made on the trailer. I have done some research and it seems that quite a bit of work is needed. So Im trying to weigh level of effort before getting started. 1. Tow hitch assembly - this appears to be the easiest piece to add as it is basically a bolt on to the existing holes in the frame at the back 2. 4/7 pin connector - per information on etrailer, it appears that the MDX may already be prewired for 4 pin connection in the storage compartment in the back. Im not sure if my Base MDX has this wiring. If it doesnt that could add more work. I have no idea how to do the 7 pin connection. 3. Brake controller wiring harness - this appears to be quite involved as the wires have to be routed from the back all the way to the battery and then also one of the wires needs to go through the firewall. 4. Brake controller - once the wiring harness is installed, this should be relatively easy, I hope 5. Tow hitch - Im assuming a class III should suffice 6. Engine / Transmission cooler - it appears that some sort of additional cooling is suggested. Im wondering if that is necessary to tow a light travel trailer. The 2005 MDX is rated for 4,500 lbs towing. My MDX has less than 65k miles on the odometer and is completely up to date maintenance wise. Anything missed? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks

Your evaluation of install time and involvement for each component is right on the money. The messiest job will be the transmission cooler, and while you may not totally need one it's a great idea that will prolong the life of the transmission either way so we recommend them highly. A cooler like the part # D13503 would be a great choice.

For a hitch the Draw Tite part # 75599 would be the way to go and it essentially bolts in place like you mentioned. I attached an install video for more info on this as well. The 4-way trailer wiring like part # 118336 is super simple to install as it basically just plugs in.

From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.
