Things To Consider When Changing from a 3/4 Ton to 1/2 Ton Tow Vehicle

Question:

We just purchased a new TT yesterday. Previously we had a 5th wheel. The manufacturer listed hitch weight is 1,136 pounds, dry weight is 8,744 pounds. Id be surprised if we carry more that 500 pounds of gear, but I estimate it at 1,000 pounds without water. We have the HUSKY #32218 • CENTER LINE TS 800-1200 lbs • 2 – 5/16” Ball. Pulled nicely with our current 2008 Silverado 3/4 diesel. whether we traveled at 55 or 70 mph. Wed like to update the truck, and have been looking at the Ford F150, properly equipped, which toes 13,200 pounds. The weight is not the problem. Im a little worried about tongue weight. The TV had virtually no squatinch at all when we brought the TT home yesterday. What are your thoughts?

There are a few things you need to consider when switching from a 3/4 ton like your 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 to a 1/2 ton like a 2018 Ford F-150. For starters, the 3/4 ton is going to have a stiffer suspension than the 1/2 ton. This means that although the 3/4 ton did not squat while towing your trailer, that's not to say that the 1/2 won't even though it may still have a higher towing capacity. Also, the 3/4 ton will be more geared towards towing while means it likely has upgraded engine oil and transmission coolers. Although the 1/2 ton may have the towing capacity you need, it still might be a better option for you to replace with a 3/4 ton if you plan to tow frequently as they will last much longer with frequent towing than a 1/2 ton.

Now with that being said, I am a bit confused on the figures you provided as they seem to be rather high for a travel trailer. I recommend loading the trailer like how you would when you are ready to tow and then weigh it with a scale like part # e99044.

Please keep in mind that most weight distribution systems are only really designed to get back half of the vehicle sag so it may also be necessary to add suspension enhancements like the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TFR1504E for 2WD or part # TFRTT1504E for 4WD.
