Replacement Braking Assemblies for a 10,000 Lb Trailer Axle

Question:

I’ve taken apart my brake assembly. The Hydraulic Drum assembly fell apart but the bearings look good. Not sure if we have the 10k HD or 9-10k axle. We do have oil bath bearings. I’ll need a complete right side brake assembly and race/seal kit but not sure what axle we have. Is there a way to tell?

The correct replacement braking assembly for your trailer should be either the Hayes/AL-KO Hydraulic Brake Kit part # K23-524-00-2 or the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit part # 23-410-411. If you take a look for a tag on the center of the axle that should tell you the manufacturer and weight capacity. If not you would need to inspect the brake mounting flange and size of the assembly. The Dexter assembly uses a 7 bolt brake mounting flange and is 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide (see photo for correct way to measure). The Hayes/AL-KO assembly uses a 5 bolt brake mounting flange and is 12-1/4" diameter x 3-1/2" wide.

In order to find the correct race/seal for your trailer you would need to either measure the spindle with a digital caliper or read the numbers off of the old seal/race. I have attached a help article to aid with this process for you as well.
