The easiest way to test your breakaway switch is to simply pull the pin and make sure the trailer brakes engage. To turn the system off you would then just reinsert the pin and everything will be ready to go again. Before doing this I do recommend disconnecting the trailer connector from the tow vehicle just to make sure nothing backfeeds to the vehicle wiring. Keep in mind too that in the event of a true breakaway situation, the trailer connector would also come loose anyway, so there isn't any need to test it when connected to the tow vehicle.
