Is Weight Distribution Needed for a 2013 Toyota 4Runner Towing a 2015 Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS

Question:

I am buying a 2015 Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS. Dry weight is 2,900 lbs. Tongue weight is 417 lbs. I am pulling it with a 2013 Toyota 4Runner. Towiing capacity is 5,000 lbs. I am getting conflicting information about needing a weight distribution hitch with sway control. Do I need one? If so, what models would you recommend? Thank you. Its all confusing........

I will be happy to help you out and clear up some things for you regarding weight distribution. The general rule of thumb is that if the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, weighs at least half of the 4Runner's weight then you should use weight distribution. Based on the weight of your 2015 Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS and 4Runner I do recommend using a weight distribution system.

Weight distribution is a good idea in general because it not only helps redistribute the trailer tongue weight but also makes for a more stable towing experience. To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Based on the weight of the trailer I recommend Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System, # FA92-00-0600, rated for 200 to 600 pounds tongue weight. This system also includes built-in sway control for additional stability and safety while towing. The narrow frame brackets that attach to the trailer frame are much less likely to interfere with anything mounted on the tongue. I did some research on your trailer and I do not see anything that would interfere with the brackets!

This system also comes with a shank with a maximum rise of 6 inches and maximum drop of 1 inch. Other shanks are available separately if more rise or drop is needed to tow the trailer level. The system also requires a compatible ball. If your trailer requires a 2 inch ball you can use # A-90. For a 2-5/16 inch ball use # 19286. I have included a link to a video review showing the features of the Fastway system for you.

I have also added some helpful links on weight distribution/sway control and determining tongue weight for you.
