How to Level a 5th Wheel Trailer to a Tall Tow Vehicle

Question:

I have a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500. Had a fifth wheel hitch installed and now seem to be having problems finding a trailer that will match my hitch height. It seems all the trailers when hitched will ride high in the front. Is there a particular year of when trailer manufacturers have adjusted their kingpin height to match up with the newer, taller trucks? I am beginning to regret getting a fifth wheel hitch installed and am thinking I should have just done a bumper pull.

I am not familiar of a year when trailer manufacturers began raising the trailer in order to match that of newer tow vehicles which are taller. However, I can say there are several option to make most trailers towable while level with a taller tow vehicle like your 2014 Ram 2500.

In order to tow the trailer level with your Ram you will need to lower the 5th wheel hitch, raise the pin box, and or raise the trailer. Please keep in mind that you will need at least 6" of clearance between the loft of the trailer and top of the bed sides on your truck in order for proper clearance which you will need to keep in mind while lowering the hitch. If the hitch and pin box adjustments do not level the trailer then you will need to raise the trailer.

In order to raise the trailer, the best option we have for you if it has leaf spring axles is the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit part # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8" diameter axles or part # K71-385-00 for 3" diameter axles. The over under kit will raise the trailer the diameter of the axle plus the height of the leaf spring pack.
