Troubleshooting Tekonsha 4-Pole Wiring Harness 118566 in 2013 Ford Escape
Question:
Hello, I have a 2013 Escape and I installed the wire harness from you guys last summer. I have towed my camper only a few times and on the last trip home I lost all of my trailer lights. Once Home I checked the lights on a separate vehicle and they worked. I used a voltmeter on my escapes trailer wiring and have found the wires to have no voltage. Can that modual go bad in that short of time. Checked fuse in battery box. Rather confused. Thanks!

Thank you for your purchase of the T-One Wiring Harness kit # 118566 for your 2013 Ford Escape.
For a harness that has suddenly gone dead the most likely causes are a blown fuse in the 12V power circuit included in the kit, a broken/loose connection in the black power wire that runs from the fuse holder to the harness module or a loose/corroded ground connection.
Checking the ground is an easy step so I suggest this first. Find the white ground wire and check that its ring terminal is tightly attached to a clean bare metal surface. You can sand that grounding point to ensure there is no paint or primer (or anything else) that could be blocking the ground connection. The ring terminal needs to be tightly attached to bare metal.
Next you can check the 12V power wire where it leads into the converter module. If the fuse and connection are good that wire should have voltage when you apply your voltmeter. If not, check that the fuse holder is free of corrosion and that there is no damage to the black power wire, all the way from the module to the engine compartment. Make sure the power wire has not shorted to the frame from abrasion or worn insulation.
If 12V operating power is reaching the module next check that the tail light connectors are fully seated together and again free of any corrosion. You can test those input signal wires from the tail lights to see if they are indeed passing the signals to the converter module.
If 12V power and input signals are present on the wiring to the module, and the ground is good, then at that point I would suspect that the harness has failed and will need to be replaced.
