instaling 118412 on 2004 subaru forester - Does the T-connector need to connect with both the drivers side wiring harness and the passenger side? I only find a similar connector on the drivers side.

The reason you may be having issues is that Wiring Harness # 118412 is not a fit for a 2004 Subaru Forester; it only fits certain model years Toyota RAV4 and Sequoia.
Instead you need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118461 which on your vehicle should plug in to a connector in the spare tire area on the passenger's side, as you can see by the linked instructions.
