Can Weight Distribution be Used on 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee With Auto Leveling

Question:

I saw the questions about the 2017 Grand Cherokee and the response regarding the weight distributing hitch. One thing that was not mentioned was the Trailhawk has factory installed air suspension that auto levels. I have the same situation and am trying to determine If I need a WDH and how it would work with air suspension? Thanks

Some auto-leveling can be turned off so that would be the best option but you can still use a weight distribution system on a vehicle that auto levels such as your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Before setting up though you will need to connect your trailer and let your Jeep auto level before setting the spring bars; a weight distribution system not only helps to level but some systems, such as the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET are designed to prevent sway, which is another huge benefit.

If you feel like you need added sway control or are not fully level when towing you would need a weight distribution system. In order to choose the best weight distribution system you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Jeep.

The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

For example, if your TTW was 800 lbs you could use the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET, which is for TTW between 600 lbs and 1,000 lbs. If you let me know what your TTW is I would be happy to make a recommendation for you so you can get the correct system.
