where do I put the linkage gear when installing motor

The Replacement Motor # LC301695 referenced in your question is designed to replace the original motor on single, double, or triple Lippert Coach Step or Stromberg Carlson Sliding Step assemblies. When installing the new motor you will need to remove the ball joint linkage from the gear. During installation care should be taken not to disturb the adjustment in the length of the linkage. Putting everything back together is just a matter of reversing the disassembly process. This is an exact replacement so the linkage and other components will install just like they were before.
I have attached a short video demonstration on this motor that you can also take a look at.
