How to Wire Five Lights On a Simple Trailer that Possibly Tilts and has Extra Ground Wires Ran

Question:

Your videos have been very helpful. Need info on how to go from running lights to the rear light three little lights mounted on rear end of frame. Also my wiring harness is a four way has short white ground then two white grounds that run the length of colored wires. How do I or do I attach these wires?

It sounds like you have a 4 wire harness that has had extra ground wires ran the length of the trailer to solve a ground issue. One possibility is that the trailer is a tilting style trailer and grounding to the frame at the rear could have presented an issue at some time. Usually I fix this type of issue with a short heavy gauge jumper wire, # 10-1-1, from the tongue portion of the trailer frame to the tilting portion of the trailer frame, but running a wire the length of the trailer will work also.

Just be sure that the ground wire from the trailer lights, or grounding stud on the back of the trailer lights, is attached to the ground wires coming from the front of the trailer. The three running lights need to be grounded also.

Now that the ground wires are attached, you will just need to splice into the brown running light wire, use a circuit tester, # PTW2993, to be sure, and run that wire over to the three running lights power wire at the center of the rear of the trailer.

We have a trailer wiring diagrams article, see link, that should be very helpful and shows the standard trailer wiring colors.
